the field between the goddesses ; of good work, very
rare , and very fine size 10J. 1
*** I find in Mionnet, S. vol. vii, p. 55, under Perga,
a description intended for this coin, but very imperfect, ;
and with a note throwing a doubt upon it. The authen- !
ticity of this coin is beyond suspicion. The Pome- |
granate, not noticed here by Mionnet, seems to give the j
coin rather to Side than Perga, as Mionnet, in his Text,
vol. iii, p. 483, No. 216, has done with a coin of Tran-
quilina bearing the same legend, and having a pome¬
granate in same position.

The following coins of the Achaean League formed a
Collection, made, as is evident, by long perseverance in
seeking varieties. They are in better condition than
coins of this class are generally. As there is but little
difference between them in this respect, it has not been
deemed necessary to specify the state of preservation of
each coin.

POSTSCRIPT.
It has been found necessary to withdraw lots 108, 109 and
113, as false. They appear to have been executed by the same
forger, and though they were carefully examined before they
were catalogued, yet they passed for true coins until the clue
was suddenly discovered.
Lot 300 was placed in the proof sheet to Ilium or Cnidus
with a query , out of deference to Mr. Whittall’s appropriation
to Ilium; but on the discovery of a portion of KNL, the coin
was placed to Cnidus — hence arose its ungeographical position.
In lot 770 occurs the name of a town Ococlea, which is
quite unknown to me, but is given to Phrygia on Mr. Whittall’s
authority.
The coin forming lot 1031, is given to Lacedaemon by
Mionnet ; but a paper by Mr. Newton, of the British Museum,
removes the appropriation to Allaria in Crete. For which,
as may be presumed in a suggestion coming from such a
quarter, strong reasons are assigned. But whichever location
is accepted, the rarity of the coin remains the same. — A. L.
